At first glance, one of the enduring charms of a period property, or one of its most hideous aspects, are their floors. It all depends on whether they have been lovingly cared for to build up a patina, or repeatedly broken by lifting carelessly to gain access to services. But timber floors are pretty resilient and often repairable. Even if the boards have shrunk so the floor is draughty and unattractive we can add in strips of wood to repair that. Or wood beetles have disfigured the timbers, depending on the extent of the damage, it may be possible to patch and stain in new timber to sort out such severe damage. We can supply non-standard floorboard widths for very old properties. And repair or replace basket weave or herringbone parquet flooring.
So before opting for new boards or covering it all up, why not call in our specially trained period floor experts for advice? They have worked on some of the most historic floors in the land. They can see past damage and neglect to give you free advice on whether you could be throwing away a unique period floor of great character that could be restored to some semblance of its former glory. Remember the advice from the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB: “you can blot out the character, age and charm of an historic building in a matter of hours.”
